Everyone loves a good garden arch, and there are so many varieties to choose from. You can grab one from Costco or your local garden store, find a local woodworker willing to build one just for you, or even make your own. The focus of this post is to share the benefits a garden arch has brought to our garden.
Our parents gave us ours, and it does a great job of creating a sense of separation in the yard. Even though it’s all the same yard, the arch makes you feel like you’re stepping into a different space — one that’s still visible, but feels set apart. It gives the impression that there’s more to the garden than there is. In our case, there actually is: the path leads around our greenhouse, even though the arch marks the visual and physical end of our property. Somehow it makes the whole space feel bigger and more secluded.
Another benefit is that we can grow climbing roses up either side. That’s been a huge help in giving our climbers solid support so they grow upward instead of toppling over in the wind. Speaking of wind — that’s also the main drawback. A garden arch can blow over in heavy gusts if it isn’t secured properly. In our case, that led to the demise of the LED bistro lights we had hanging from it. Oh, the calamity…
To end on a bright note, our arch is made of wood, so it complements the wood planter boxes that host our mini roses and really helps draw the eye upward to those blooms. This post is a short one, but I hope it helps shed light on a few of the benefits we’ve found in owning a garden arch.
