Preventing Heat Stress – Helping Roses Survive Hot Weather

As temperatures rise in June, roses can begin to show signs of heat stress. Wilting leaves, drooping flowers, and crispy brown edges are all signals that the heat is taking a toll. While roses are naturally resilient, they still need extra care to stay healthy during hot weather. Taking the right precautions can help roses thrive even on the warmest days.

One of the most important ways to protect roses from heat stress is by watering them deeply and consistently. Shallow watering only wets the surface, leaving roots thirsty. A slow, deep soak two to three times a week allows moisture to reach deep into the soil, where roots can access it even during extreme heat. If possible, using a drip irrigation system or a soaker hose helps deliver water directly to the roots without wetting the leaves. I like to leave my hose with a shower attachment in-between two rose plants for five minutes soaking water directly into the soil. This five minutes releases 5 gallons of water that spreads between the two roses.

Providing some afternoon shade can also help roses during heatwaves. While roses need at least six hours of sunlight a day, extreme afternoon heat can be stressful. If roses are in a location with full sun exposure all day, temporary shade from garden fabric or a nearby plant can give them a break. Potted roses are especially vulnerable and may need to be moved to a shadier spot during the hottest part of the day.

Mulching is another great way to keep roses cool and hydrated. A two- to three-inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or compost, helps keep soil moisture from evaporating too quickly. It also regulates soil temperature, keeping roots from overheating.

Avoiding pruning and fertilizing during extreme heat is important. Freshly cut stems lose moisture quickly, and fertilizers can stimulate new growth that is too fragile to handle high temperatures. Instead, focusing on hydration and shade will help roses recover from heat stress without adding extra strain.

With proper care, roses can survive and even thrive during the hottest months of the year. By ensuring deep watering, providing occasional shade, using mulch, and avoiding unnecessary stress, roses will continue to bloom beautifully throughout the summer.
