Even though summer is coming to an end, rose shows are still happening. A late season rose show is a fun way to display your roses and see what other gardeners have grown. It’s exciting to take part and even more exciting if your rose wins a ribbon!
To enter a rose show, you’ll need to choose your best blooms. Look for roses that are fresh, with strong color and perfect petals. Pick them early in the morning, and place them in water right away so they stay fresh. Some people cut their roses the night before and keep them cool in the fridge.
When you get to the show, you’ll see tables filled with vases and tags. Each rose must be labeled with its name and class, like hybrid tea or floribunda. There might be helpers who can show you where to place your entry. Everyone wants the display to look neat and organized.
Judges look for roses that are clean, well-formed, and free of bugs or spots. They may also consider the size, color, and how well the rose represents its type. If you win a ribbon, it means your rose is one of the best there! We have yet to win a first prize in two rose shows, but will keep at it to get the perfect blooms to show. As a beginner, it can feel daunting, but I encourage you to just give it whirl. The people of the rose societies that put on the rose shows on are super helpful, and you likely won’t have to compete against experts as each typically offers a beginner class to compete in.
Even if you decide not to enter a rose, it’s fun to attend and see the many kinds of roses on display. You can meet other rose lovers, ask questions, and learn tips from experienced growers. Some rose shows even have prizes for kids or for small arrangements.
A rose show is more than just a contest—it’s a celebration of everyone’s hard work and love for roses. Whether you’re entering, watching, or cheering for a friend, it’s a great way to end the summer rose season. Enjoy!
